A while ago I ordered a pimped out Holga from Holga Mods and haven’t used it until recently. I was on location at a quarry somewhere in Delaware with Beth Caldwell and pulled it out. It was a fairly bright day and if you know anything about a Holga the exposure settings are seriously limited so one sort of guesses and hopes for the best. Experience has taught me to give it plenty of exposure and I have yet to overexpose a negative with the Holga so that’s what I did. About three weeks after the shoot I processed the film and had some very interesting images. This is the first one I printed and I’ve titled it I’ll Protect you”. We talk a lot about post production in the digital world but not so much in the analog world. Perhaps because there are very few people still working with traditional wet darkroom processes.

The post production on this image has everything to do with the finished product. It was in post that my vision really came together on this one. Validating once again that every step in the process of making photographs is critical to and contributes to achieving ones vision.

Shooting with the Holga along with this particular image has given me some ideas and inspiration for a project. Now all I need is the discipline and time to start the project.

In the summer of 2003 I attended my first photography workshop at The Maine Media Workshops. I had just made a serious commitment to traditional black and white photography at the time and wanted to work on my vision and “seeing” images. It was a serious investment both in time and money so I chose the workshop and instructor very carefully. I found a workshop titled “The Photographers Eye” and felt that it would be appropriate. Cig Harvey was the instructor so I spent some time looking at her credentials and work. I was so inspired by what I saw that my decision was easy. Off to Maine I went… It did not take long to validate my decision. It was without a doubt one of the best weeks of my life and changed my approach to photography. I still recall things I learned that week and use them in my work. I visit Cig’s web site occasionally to look in what she has been doing. I continue to be inspired by her approach to photography and the work she produces. I visited her web site this morning and noticed a video link that I’d not seen before. She discusses her work as the images scroll by. Once again my excitement for photography has been heightened and my inspiration renewed. Every time I look at her work my mind races finding new approaches for my own work. I would suggest a visit to her web site and having a look at the video.

I’ve decided to have a go at shooting some 4×5 sheet film. I’m always looking for something new and different to tinker with in my photography and while I have shot some large format in the past, I never really got serious about it. I do shoot a lot of medium format and pretty much have that process nailed. The first tests with the 4×5 were in the studio yesterday with a live model and did not go well. A few mistakes on my part and working to establish a work flow that is successful for me. One huge positive is that I did not scratch the film. My past large format experience is with 8×10 and I succeeded in making a mess of the film with scratches. The 8×10 film is tray processed in total darkness unless you have some expensive equipment which I do not. Tanks are available for the 4×5 so it’s much easier and less likely to get scratched.

Shooting large format is a very slow deliberate process and can be frustrating when working with people. Especially after shooting so much digital which really moves fast. Models tend to move around a lot making composition and focusing a large format camera challenging. Holding poses for long periods of time can be difficult for some models, however many experienced models work with art classes and are totally capable. I think the important thing here is to work with the model and explain exactly what’s going on and how things will move. The experienced models usually have worked with large format photographers so they totally understand. I also try to work with poses that are easier for them to hold.

It really is a different process that’s humbling and rough when first getting into it but can be incredibly rewarding when working with large negatives in the darkroom. So much more information on the film resulting in exceptional prints.

More testing and fine tuning of my work flow before I’m ready to share any results.

An old friend has come back to see me. By what is perhaps a sign or message from the photography gods my darkroom gear is now back in my house and almost ready for some printing As I’m cleaning things up and getting ready to print, I’m finding myself reenergized with what lies ahead in the wonderful world of silver printing. I’ve invested countless hours over the years in polishing my printing skills and I’ve never really totally abandoned darkroom work but was seduced by the digital workflow and all it has to offer. I now have both and have also begun the journey into platinum/palladium printing.

I’ve been struggling and searching over the past few months trying to find a direction for the volume of work that I have been producing. Hard drives full of images rolling around as little more than zeros and ones. I now believe that I’m on a path to seeing much of the work really come to life. Digital printing, yes. Traditional silver printing, yes. Ink jet transfer printing, yes. Platinum/ palladium printing, yes. Did I mention digital negatives for silver printing? I’m overjoyed with the creative and artistic possibilities that all of these options present.

I purposely kept my shooting schedule thin for the month of May to charge the batteries a bit and catch up on some other things. I suppose it’s a good idea to slow down every now and then. I’m returning to a much busier shooting schedule in June and am very excited about the models I have scheduled I may even do an entire shoot with film, no digital. I’ve not done this in quite some time but it seems a challenge I should accept.

I shoot a lot of pictures of different people always trying new and different concepts and lighting sets. In many cases I know as I’m shooting that the images will be good but I tend to set extremely high standards for myself. It seems that the more I shoot the more I expect the quality of the work to improve. Not a bad thing really but can lead to self induced frustration. My appetite for improving quality and creativity is insatiable . I was shooting with Olivia yesterday and I shot this image and it felt really good. I knew I had something I would really enjoy and appreciate. I suppose that the message is that when it feels right it usually is. I go with feel and emotion a lot when evaluating my work and have learned to trust my instincts. I do hope others enjoy the image but my reward and satisfaction is in knowing that I’ve made a photograph that I really like.

Beth and Hunter

I have worked with Beth a few times in the past so we knew each other but I had not met Hunter prior to this session. They both model for other photographers as well so they are both comfortable in front of the camera. Thanks to them for making my job easy!!! They were very relaxed and animated and really enjoyed themselves. My experience with male nudes is also extremely limited so part of my goal for the session was to tap into my feelings and vision for male nudes. The male form is just as beautiful as the female.

Beth and Hunter

Working with real emotion is a very special experience for me. Differing from many situations where art is being created and in many cases the models are there as actors with their job being interpretation of a concept and then of course executing it. Real honest emotion takes on a whole different level of energy and creativity and is something that I cherish and enjoy.

I recently entered a few pieces into a juried show at the Chester County Art Association along with my friend Scott Nichol. We both have two pieces in the show and congrats go out to Scott for an honorable mention! It’s extremely rewarding for me personally any time I’m able to show my work in public spaces and this is in my own community which makes it even more special. The show was also reviewed by the local newspaper (Daily Local News). The review is attached below. A few weeks ago I was contacted by the staff at the Art Association asking me to organize and teach a figure workshop at the Art Center. Needless to say I’m incredibly excited about this opportunity. The workshop is scheduled for Sunday March 7th from 9am – 6pm at the Art Association. Anyone interested in attending can contact the Chester County Art Association to register.
